the Crowd
The appraisal industry has become increasingly competitive in
recent years. By establishing an Associate Membership in the Appraisal
Institute, you take an important step toward distinguishing yourself
as a well-credentialed and highly qualified professional who is
committed to bringing measurable value and expertise to the appraisal
profession.
Associate Membership is open to appraisers who perform work identified
by the Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice and may be
pursuing the Appraisal Institute’s prestigious MAI or SRA
designation. To set themselves apart in the marketplace, all Associate
members have a Standards of Professional Practice (SPP) requirement
for membership. Within each cycle, the Associate member must meet
both components of the SPP requirement:
USPAP - the Associate Member must provide proof of passing the
15-Hour National Uniform Standards of Professional Practice (USPAP)
course/exam within the first year of membership or within the
4 years prior to membership. If the Associate Member has previously
received credit for the 15-Hour USPAP, the 7-Hour USPAP may be
taken instead. To receive credit for USPAP courses taken from
a provider other than the Appraisal Institute, submit Course Completion
Verification forms to the Associate Member Service Center.
Business Practices and Ethics - The Associate Member must take
and pass the Appraisal Institute's Business Practices and Ethics
course (available online and in the classroom).
Associate members enjoy access to educational and reference programs
and materials specifically geared toward moving them ahead in
their profession. Read about the many benefits of Associate Membership
in the Appraisal Institute.
General Associate members may work toward the prestigious MAI
designation. Appraisers who hold the MAI membership designation
are experienced in the valuation of commercial, industrial, residential
and other types of properties and advise clients on real estate
investment decisions. Learn more about the Appraisal Institute’s
MAI designation.
Students enrolled in an Appraisal Institute-approved Master’s
Degree Program may work toward their MAI designation while pursuing
their advanced degrees. Learn more about the Master's Degree Program,

Designated Membership:
The Appraisal Institute’s MAI and SRA designations have
long been recognized by courts of law, government agencies, financial
institutions and investors as marks of excellence in the field
of real estate valuation and analysis. Obtaining the MAI or SRA
designation shows your clients that you have gone above and beyond
the education and experience needed for state certification and
demonstrated professional knowledge, understanding and ability.
As a designated member of the Appraisal Institute, you make a
commitment to advanced education, defined ethical requirements
and higher expectations for the appraisal profession as a whole.
Furthermore, an Appraisal Institute survey reports that designated
appraisers have a 31 percent higher mean income than undesignated
appraisers, indicating that our designations are highly valued
in the marketplace.
The MAI designation is held by appraisers who are experienced
in the valuation and evaluation of commercial, industrial, residential
and other types of properties, and who advise clients on real
estate investment decisions. View requirements for the MAI designation.
The SRA designation is held by appraisers who are experienced
